Reversing the Abortion Pill
Reversing RU-486 Within 72 hours of Taking The Abortion Pill
What happens if you take the abortion pill (RU-486) and then change your mind? Suddenly you wish you hadn't done it and no longer want an abortion. What can you do? Can you change your mind at this late point, or is your baby in an unstoppable death spiral?
Thanks to the efforts of some pro-life doctors who were faced with this question by panicked girls who did, in fact, change their minds, successful methods have been developed to actually reverse the effects of that first abortion pill and prevent it from causing the death of the unborn child.
To understand how this can be done it is important to first understand the process that occurs in a medical (RU-486) abortion. In this type of non-surgical abortion the first pill called mifepristone is given at the Planned Parenthood or other abortion clinic and is used up until 9 weeks of pregnancy. Mifepristone counteracts the natural pregnancy hormone progesterone, which is critical to maintaining a pregnancy. Without progesterone the placenta fails, cutting off oxygen and nutrition to the baby, resulting in his/her death. The patient leaves the clinic after the first pill and is instructed to take the second pill, misoprostol, 36 to 72 hours later. Misoprostol causes the contractions which will then expel the dead baby within several hours or a few days. RU-486 is advertised as a very safe abortion method, but when a San Francisco abortion clinic administered the pill to 18-year-old Holly Patterson, she suffered the ultimate abortion complication. Holly died a week later from a massive infection as a result of fragments of the fetus left inside her uterus which caused her to go into septic shock.
Having been first approached by a desperate girl who had taken only the first pill and then decided she wanted to stop her abortion, Dr. George Delgado from San Diego, California, tried a new technique he felt might work for her. Since it is the progesterone that is necessary to maintain the pregnancy, Dr. Delgado felt that if the patient was given high and frequent injections of progesterone, it just might counteract the mifepristone and stop the abortion. This was followed up by further injections and ultrasounds to monitor the baby. His efforts produced the desired results, as the new mother gave birth to a healthy baby boy several months later.
After studying five other cases, Dr. Delgado published his medical protocol for reversing the abortion pill in The Annals of Pharmacotherapy in December 2012. Dr. Delgado revealed that the latest the treatment was successful was 72 hours after taking the first mifepristone and estimates the failure rate at only about 8% to 10% of the time.
Dr. Delgado is the medical director at the Culture of Life Family Services, a Catholic family healthcare clinic and crisis pregnancy center in San Diego and is rapidly expanding the reach of the abortion pill reversal technique. He now has a network of over 80 pro-life doctors in 22 states who are able to perform the abortion reversals.
Dr. Delgado certainly has his work cut out for him, however, as California alone represents 17% of all the abortions nationwide. In fact, in California 23% of all pregnancies end in abortion, compared to the national average of 16.9%. Abortion clinics are advertising extensively in California as well. For example, if you do a Google search for abortion in California, 15 to 16 abortion clinics will come up on the first page, compared to only 1 site offering alternatives to abortion. Some clinics focus their ads on the abortion pill and emphasize that the abortion can take place in the comfort of your own home. Many other clinics appeal to the college population offering no surgery options and RU-486. These clinics estimate that 30% of all abortions are now performed using the RU-486 pills.
Regardless of these statistics, the Abortion Pill Reversal Project (APR) under Dr. Delgado's leadership is growing rapidly to offer another choice to girls who have second thoughts about ending their pregnancies. Anyone who has taken that first pill and then changed her mind can go online to www.abortionpillreversal.com or call their toll free hotline at 877-558-0333. After stopping the abortion process they won't just leave a girl to fend for herself. They have helped with housing, medical benefits, counseling, and basic necessities for the girls and their babies. Like pressing a rewind button, they are providing real choices to those who want and need them.
